Age is just a number, says 41-year-old first year nursing student. No one is ever too old to get an education and age should never be a barrier, says Mainaz Gafoor.

Ms Gafoor is a first year student at the Fiji National University pursuing her Degree in Nursing.

But before that, last year, the mother-of-four children completed her Certificate IV in Enrolled Nursing and scooped a gold medal for her outstanding performance.

She received her medal last week.

She hails from Valebasoga in Labasa.

“After high school, I joined Sangam College of Nursing, but had to quit due to personal reasons,” Ms Gafoor said.

“I always wanted to become a nurse because my father was an Operation Theatre (OT) attendant and was always fascinated by his gown and I wanted to help those who are sick.

“I have worked in a lot of places, but I always wanted to become a nurse. Four kids later, I decided to finally pursue what I always wanted to do.

“My husband has been supportive and for that I am thankful.”

Ms Gafoor said education was the most powerful weapon anyone could have and it could make someone’s dream come true.

“My set of twins are also first year students pursuing their Degree at the University of the South Pacific and they have been supportive. We will all be graduating around the same time,” she said.

“When being told I was a gold medal recipient it was a surprise because I did not expect it. My sacrifices are all worth the effort.”

Her advice to those who want to go back to school, but are reluctant due to their age said: “Age should not stop you from achieving your dreams. Education is something that no one can ever take away from you.”
