Christmas Suva

- Dewan Chand,

On December 25, 2021 the Christian world will celebrate its biggest festival, Christmas. Thus marking the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. Millions of greeting cards, millions of gifts, millions of mobile/video calls, millions of family lunches /dinners and picnics would have been celebrated in the merrymaking of Christmas day.

The devout millions will visit churches to offer their prayers in this difficult time of global Coronavirus pandemic

For over a month now the supermarkets on their loud speakers have been blaring the song jingle bells, jingle bells luring customers to spend their hard earned millions on Christmas gifts.

Millions of Christmas trees have been decorated and buildings also to mark the occasion. There is feverish pitch of buying and selling. In Fiji we will see lovo pit smoke gracefully rising towards the sky. At lunch we will hear a cacophony of voices in laughter and merrymaking to raise the human spirit!

Santa Claus (Father Christmas) is yet another concoction of the human mind to spread the message of happiness, peace & joy. We see Santa Claus riding a sledge pulled by reindeer.

He carries a bag of goodies/gifts for children. Of recent origin is the Coca-Cola advertisement which shows Santa Claus distributing gifts and bottles of coke...what an ingenious way to promote business !

However, the question still remains: does anyone really know the exact date of the birth of Christ? We know that He was born of Virgin Mary in a manger. This was a miraculous birth as the three Magi brought good news and father Joseph had nothing to do with the pregnancy.

Be as it may, the Christmas is a great festival to lift the sagging spirit of humanity in these difficult times. May Lord’s righteousness & blessings fall on all. Merry Christmas.
