Communicate your thoughts and ideas to make people understand

-

Smayurkalbag@ hotmail.com avinesh was called by his boss to explain about his meeting with their client.

“So, how was your interaction with the client?” the boss asked excitedly.

Savinesh explained in great detail about each and everything that had transpired at the client-meeting. But then, suddenly the boss interrupted him.

“Savinesh, I have to stop you here, because from the time you have started explaining to me, I have not understood anything.

“In fact, I am more confused now than before,” the boss said this with a miffed look.

He immediately called Savinesh’s junior colleague, who had accompanied him to the client-meeting, to his cabin.

“Hi Rodger, please can you tell me what all happened at the meeting.”

“Sure Sir.” Saying this Rodger explained each and everything eloquently while Savinesh kept silently looking at him.

The boss thanked Rodger and then when he left the room started speaking to Savinesh.

Interestingly, the boss spoke exactly like the way Savinesh spoke.

There was no clarity in the speech, the tone and the volume were extremely low and add to that, the speech was too fast without any pauses between the words or the sentences.

After some time, the boss asked, “So Savinesh, please can you tell me what I just said to you?”

Hearing this Savinesh looked baffled and silently nodded to say no.

The boss continued, “The way you heard me speak to you is exactly the way you sound when you speak to me and the others.

“You are one of the brightest engineers we have in our team but the problem is that when you communicate, it becomes almost impossible to understand what you are saying.

“Please remember, your main aim of speaking must be to make people understand your thoughts and ideas and that will happen when your words are clear and sentences are concise or to the point.

“Along with this you must also speak at a volume that will help them listen to you without straining their ears!

“From today onwards I want you to start improving your verbal communication by using the tips that I have shared with you.”

Savinesh realised and accepted the feedback from his boss and immediately started working on his communication.

Today, after a year, he is one of the best communicators in his department!

I hope that there are some aspects of verbal communication which we too can learn from the boss’s feedback to Savinesh!
