Changing subjects during Year 11 studies at Adventist High School, has helped Emosi Ravosai pursue the maritime career he always dreamt of.

Now Captain Ravosai, the 29-yearold graduated with his Diploma in Nautical Science from the Maritime Academy as a Class 3 Captain.

He is believed to be the first member of the Yavusa Vuniyavu of Naduria Dreketi in Rewa to receive such achievement.

His mother Adi Alisi Ravosai said her son’s achievement was a timely reminder of setting goals at a young age.

Mrs Ravosai said at the time Emosi was still in high school, she overheard on an i-taukei radio station about the various programmes available at Fiji National University (FNU).

“The announcer was talking about the importance of helping children choose the right subjects for the right career when they leave high school. That was when my husband and I told Emosi to study Physics, Basic Technology, Wood Work, English and Mathematics,” she said.

Initially, Mrs Ravosai wanted her son to become a school teacher.

It wasn’t until seeking advice from a lecturer at FNU that her son wanted to pursue maritime studies.

“He was more interested in doing practical work so when he joined the Maritime Academy in 2011, his interest grew and he learnt a lot,” she said.

After two years studying, Captain Ravosai was recruited as a cadet for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

He went on to be deployed to Sinai for a year before returning to Fiji to resume his maritime studies.

“It was a bit of a challenge to get him to resume studies but we kept pushing him to complete his studies and learn the trade,” Mrs Ravosai said.

Captain Ravosai has three children and plans to further his maritime studies .
