Ratu Sela’s funeral rekindles history: Matawalu

- MERELEKI NAI Edited by Karalaini Waqanidrola

The village of Saunaka was a sombre setting yesterday when people from all corners of Fiji gathered to farewell a Fijian gladiator.

Former national rugby skipper and elusive number 8, Ratu Sela Toga, 84, was laid to rest in Nadi yesterday.

He had passed away in his sleep at his home in Saunaka on Christmas Day.

The most significant part of his achievement was when led the Flying Fijians to beat the British Barbarians 29-9 in 1970 at Gosforth, England.

Former Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Nasivi Ravouvou, Ratu Jope Seniloli, Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese, nippy halfback Isimeli Batibasaga were part of the tour.

Ratu Sela had first donned the white jersey in 1963 representing Fiji at the first South Pacific Games, which they won gold.

The following year he was part of the first Fijian side that toured

Wales, France and Canada. They played 12 matches three of which were tests.

Fiji lost to Wales in Cardiff Arms Park 22-28 and later to France 15-40.

In his eulogy Fiji Rugby Operation Manager West, Tiko Matawalu said Ratu Sela’s funeral has rekindled history of how Fijian braves played for country and vanua.

Matawalu said the late Ratu Sela has left a benchmark for future Saunaka, Nadi and Flying Fijians to pursue.

“Saunaka has produced many good players who have represented Nadi, other unions and Fiji; some have moved overseas to elevate their livelihood and families back home,” Matawalu said.

“Lately we haven’t heard much Saunaka but this farewell has rekindled history telling young players that their fathers and grandfathers, uncles and forefathers have done so many positives for their country and vanua. There is no excuse for them to repeat and better these achievements.

“Ratu Sela was someone who created history not only for himself and family but also for Fiji. He led the team that beat the Barbarian team 49 years ago.

“It was not until in 2019 that Fiji held off a late comeback from the Barbarians to claim an entertaining 33-31 win at Twickenham.

“He led and fought, shed blood and tears for his nation and vanua.

“Fiji Rugbyhas lost someone who has guarded and played for his country with pride. We hope that such record will inspire young upcoming players.”

Ratu Sela had played 42 games for Fiji earning him 11 caps, 19 tries and 57 points before hanging his boots in 1975

The late Ratu Sela is survived by his five children and ten grandchildren.

Two of his grandsons are playing rugby in New Zealand. Aminiasi Toga plays for the Crusaders Academy in Christchurch while Josua Tuibua is playing for the Kelston Boys College in Auckland.
