He is renowned in the NRL (National Rugby League) for his ruthless tackles, power running and finishing abilities.
Every time he touches the ball, St George Illawarra Dragons fans are on their toes expecting the unexpected from their Fijian flyer.
Mikaele Ravalawa is the club’s scoring machine in the NRL.
Hailing from Galoa in Serua with maternal links to Nasivikoso, Ba, he sees himself as a proud Fijian ambassador.
He is fond of cracking jokes and getting along with people.
Even at the Bati’s camp, he is always seen mingling with the new players, conversing with them, and making them feel right at home.
Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Ravalawa said staying humble and be connected with people was critical.
“I came from the village straight to the NRL,” Ravalawa recalled.
“Telling jokes has been part of my life right from the village. Yes, I’ve continued it here in Australia because I always believe that laughter is a good medicine and an ideal way to relieve stress.”
Ravalawa said whenever he met people from Fiji, he always made it a point to make them feel comfortable.
“I’m always there to break the ice
and create a fun relationship with them. This is our way of life back home.”
He said life was a struggle but what kept him going was perseverance and a heart to enjoy things as they came.
“Growing up, I played rugby union back at Lomary Secondary School,” Ravalawa added.
For Saturday’s Pacific Test against the Papua New Guinea Kumuls, Ravalawa starts with Parramatta Eels’ Maika Sivo on the wings.
His selection in the line-up has pushed his determination to work harder, especially with the Rugby League World Cup at the end of the year.
“Everyone is well prepared, looking
for a spot in the team since it is World Cup year,” he said.
“Selection will be tough for the coaching staff when they see the talents across the board and most importantly in our positions. All these up-and-coming players will give us a tough time because like all players they are focused on this test and the World Cup.”
Ravalawa believes they must give their best at Campbelltown Sports Stadium in Sydney because the Kumuls are no pushover.
