Nausori Town Council has warned mechanical garages to stop abandoning vehicles at road sides.

Council special administrator chairperson, Uma Kant Patel, said Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) was getting the roads fixed and it wanted the council to clear the side of all roads.

“We want people to know abandoning vehicles at road sides is illegal. People just seem to lack civic pride and their social responsibilities,” Mr Patel said.

“They find it so easy to blame the council for not doing its part, but yet continue to practise illegal activity and pollute the town.”

The council has have notified suspected owners and if they don’t remove eyesore vehicles by this week they will be towed away.

The council also noticed a few garage owners who are the major culprits.

“They repair the vehicles and abandon the vehicles at the road sides,” Mr Patel said.

Action will be taken against those found to have abandoned vehicles on road sides.

“Three abandoned vehicles were towed away from the Manoca Industrial area. We have also removed one from Mistry Lane in Nausori,” he said.

“We recently warned one garage owner at Vunimono, Nausori and three garage owners at Manoca Industrial. Fines could be as high as $1000 in such cases because they are Industrial waste.”
