Illegal Dumping of Rubbish Raises Concern

- JONE SALUSALU Edited by Rayape Karavaki Feedback: jone.salusalu@fijisun.com.fj

Anurashika Bari is concerned about the illegal dumping of rubbish that has been a sight for sore eyes at Waidamudamu Settlement in Nakasi.

The Nausori and Nasinu Town council chief executive officer disclosed that the council had done sufficient ground work to aid residents with the disposal of their rubbish.

Ms Bari said it was evident during the recent heavy rain that residents in the area were not practising the proper disposal of rubbish.

“Waidamudamu got flooded in October. We have pictures of the place that shows that a lot of people dumped their rubbish in the drain,” Ms Bari said.

“On Monday evening, we had a meeting with all stakeholders and Waidamudamu Settlement residents.

“We need this issue to be highlighted because there are a lot of other ways that residents can use to dispose of their rubbish, for instance; composting, and recycling,” Ms Bari said.

She is still trying to understand why residents are not practising proper ways to dump their rubbish.

She feels people need more civic pride for their surroundings.

“The council has already provided residents with designated bins,” she said.

Rubbish collection

“There are collections three times a week, and once a month on green waste collection. Despite these rubbish collections, residents

are still littering carelessly.

“The residents must take ownership and take care of their environment.”

Naitasiri provincial advisory

councilor Koroka Balemaiwai expressed similar discontent towards the issue.

Mr Balemaiwai said residents must take ownership and communities needed to conduct regular clean up to reduce waste.
