Golfers line up for Roger Probert Trophy

The Fiji Senior Golfers Associatio­n will host the Fiji Gas sponsored- Roger Probert Trophy 2022 at the Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa, Suva, this Saturday.

This annual event, which begun in 2008, is between the Fiji Senior Golfers and the Fiji Golf Club (Young Bucks).

The trophy was last played in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic where the Fiji Senior Golfers won by 582–542 points.

New golfers

Associatio­n secretary Suzie Yee said, this year there would be a number of young seniors playing.

“This will be interestin­g to see if the trophy could be retained by the seniors,” the former Fiji squash queen said.

She added that following the recent success of the Kimono Sales and the Western Seniors tournament­s, a big field is expected this weekend with the course in perfect conditions.

More prizes and food

Executives from the sponsors, Fiji Gas will be present at 7.30am on Saturday to light their cauldron followed by the tee-off at 8am.

“Thanks to Fiji Gas who has given some of their products as prizes together with drinks and nibbles during the prize giving,” Yee said.

Associatio­n president Vijay Madhavan said: “The late Roger Probert is remembered for his love for golf and the Fiji Golf Course.

“He used to plant trees on the course where he won an I.O.C (Internatio­nal Olympic Committee) sports and environmen­t trophy.”

Just a glance

The late Roger Probert was born on March 19, 1917 and died on February, 5, 2016 at age of 98.

He represente­d Fiji at the 1969 South Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea with his children Lyndall Fisher and Harvie Probert who both were in the swimming team.

He also represente­d Fiji at the World Veterans Championsh­ips in Colorado, USA, New Zealand and Australia on several occasions.

As a businessma­n he establishe­d Ready Gas in Fiji in 1956 that later became Fiji Gas.

He was a member of Lautoka Golf Club and played in the East versus West.

The late Probert represente­d the West when lived there in the early 1950s and then for the East in the 1960s-1970s.

He was the president of FGC for 11 years from 1985 to 1995. He captained FGC from 1961 to 1962.

He won the FSGA Open Champion 1986 and had holes in one at FGC in 1961 and 1991.
