Nadroga Arya College is one of the first schools in the Nadroga Navosa Province to build its own mini weather station.

It has led to a record number of students pursuing study in physics.

The mini weather station provides data such as for wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, rainfall, and forecast.

This project was possible through a FIJI Water Foundation 2022 Classroom Grant under the ‘learning supplies’ through the application made by the head of department mathematics and physics, Ashrit Vinit Kumar.

“Nadroga Arya College is rising higher to rescue the SDG 4 through providing quality education that is unaltered in these challenging times to ensure children are able to acclimatise to an increasingly changing world,” he said.

“Also keeping in mind and promoting SDG 7, we have installed solar streetlights to save electricity cost, which in fact is affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.”

With the grant, he was able to buy renewable energy models such as wind turbines and solar panels for our school’s science lab.

“While teaching students about renewable energy sources, it is important to show them the real life application,” Mr Kumar said.

He added that this would reduce schools’ financial burden for organising excursions to Fiji Metrological Services.

“Our students are 21st Century learners and therefore it is important for us teachers to be on par with the digital world,” Mr Kumar said.

On behalf of school administration, teachers and students, he showed his sincere gratitude and appreciation to Fiji Water for providing him with the $4000 teacher grant.

“I would recommend other teachers to apply for Fiji Water teacher grants in future to equip your school with modern technologies relating to the subject area.”

Principal Pramesh Kumar congratulated Mr Kumar.

“Thanking you for your initiative to source some funds from other avenues in the quest to provide the best education opportunity to the students,” he said.

FIJI Water Foundation executive Eapi Nabou was also present at the recognition. He said, “all of us at the FIJI Water Foundation are proud to support your project and look forward to seeing the impact that it will have on your students.”
