Dux Becomes Emotional Over Achievement
An emotional, Shyrin Shobna Nadan cried happy tears after she was announced as Dux of Ba Sangam College at the school’s annual awards day on Friday.
The 18-year-old from Qerelevu, Ba was also the head girl of the school.
Apart from her Dux achievement, the pure science student was also awarded the first prize in the Year 13 stream, awarded this year’s best science student, the school’s leadership award as the head girl, she gained the overall highest score in the Year 12 Examination 2021 and topped all her subjects in English – 85, Maths – 88, Physics – 92, Biology – 80 and Chemistry – 85.
Shyrin, who is the second eldest child of four siblings said although she was a little disappointed with her marks, she was still content that she achieved the Dux award.
She resides with her grandparents, who she has to attend to after returning from school daily.
“When I get home from school, I have some set of chores to do and also assist my grandparents who I live with,” she said.
“I have to put my grandfather to sleep and then around 10pm I begin my studies and I can finish about 3am.”
She said it was a tough situation to be in but through the support from her other family members, friends and teachers she was able to put a smile on her face every day and work to achieve her dream.
Shyrin plans to pursue her tertiary studies next year in environmental science.
The Minister for Employment, Productivity, Industrial Relations, Youth and Sports, Parveen Bala, who officiated as chief guest at the awards day, congratulated all the students for their achievements.
He said the students, teachers and communities pulled through the difficult situation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I know you all have come through some difficult times especially in the past two years with the efforts of the Government, the frontline workers of which I gratefully acknowledge and also the teachers and the wider communities managed the situation well and are now well on the path to recovery,” Mr Bala said.
“Education and learning provides the strongest possible foundation to succeed in this challenging world.”
The 65-year-old school has a current roll of 290.
