Geopolitical tensions Stability guaranteed

-

Dewan Chand,

Suva

The unprovoked and illegal attack by Russia on Ukraine some nine months ago sent shock waves around the globe.

This conflict killed tens of thousands of people and uprooted millions who became refugees. And there is no sign of any cessation in the conflict. Russia has withdrawn its troops but continues to bombard the Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.

Major world economies have taken the hit and are now on a downward spiral. Inflation is at an all-time high, and the cost of food and fuel is skyrocketing. The supply chain has been disrupted and the tension is mounting.

Threats and counter threats have sent shivers down the human spine. Are we sitting on the brink of a nuclear war?

From December 1, 2022, India will take the chair of G20, and the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has called on world leaders to desist from war, and find solutions to problems through dialogue.

This looks like a distant dream as NATO members want to enforce sanctions against Russia. Poland is already building razor wire walls along the Lithuanian border. Troops have been amassed along the Russian border. Tanks and other war supplies are being sent to bolster Ukrainian spirit to fight back.

All this is not helpful on a geopolitical platform.

Tarun Tikaram,

I wish to respond to Dr Neelesh Gounder’s comments.

I fully concur with you good doctor. Who wants instability? But you need not worry doctor because Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama not only offers but guarantees stability, as has been proven for the past 16 years.

Unfortunately, you have jumped the gun, or let me say, putting the cart before the horse. Let us get to the bridge before we cross it.
