Walesi Carnival to Become An Annual Event in Labasa
‘Information is critically important; information is empowering, when people have access to information they can make informed decisions.’
After a successful inaugural carnival at Subrail Park in Labasa, Walesi chief executive officer Sanjay Maharaj has decided that it would become an annual event.
Mr Maharaj along with his team organised a one-day event last Saturday at around a cost of $30,000.
“We had the ground available beforehand and it was a lot easier for us to organise everything such as a free ferris wheel ride and bouncer castle for children,” Mr Maharaj said.
“We understand that a lot of events and festivals are held in Viti Levu and people of the North desire to have the same experience.”
He said this weekend they would have a similar carnival in Ba.
They plan to have it in Savusavu before the year end on a date to be confirmed.
‘Information is critically Important’
Meanwhile, the chief guest at the carnival was the Attorney-General and Minister for Communications Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.
The carnival is part of Walesi’s outreach to the community. “Government at least two years or so ago had worked out with Walesi to ensure that we get the coverage of Walesi throughout Fiji,” Mr SayedKhaiyum said.
“They have for example, started connecting people with Walesi set top boxes for those who earned below $30,000.
“This carnival here is part and partial of promoting Walesi, getting the community together as you can see different agencies and companies at the carnival to be able to promote their products, but also in respect of telecommunication connectivity. Information is critically important; information is empowering, when people have access to information they can make informed decisions.” Hence, he is urging people to get connected as Walesi platform has different channels where anyone can watch such as parliamentary sessions, religious and entertainment.
