Ethically driven men act as equalisers against violence

Gender equality-conscious men are vital equalisers against domestic violence and other forms of violence against women and children. Vunimoli advisory councillor, Navin Kumar, shared this during a recent visit by the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviatio­n, Permanent Secretary, Jennifer Poole to their community.

Mr Kumar said men should report cases of domestic violence in their community and create a safe environmen­t for their own families and not engage in victimisin­g their family members.

“Men are also victimised and a victim of domestic violence in some cases,” he said.

“I think out of 10 people who are victimised through domestic violence, almost three are men treated unfairly.” Mr Kumar said men who were treated unfairly could contact and use the National Domestic helpline number: 1560 Vunimoli Sanatan Mother’s Club president, Naleen Lata, said supportive husbands were great contributo­rs to a peaceful community and household.

Ms Poole said women or females attaining education and jobs had the tools to safeguard themselves and be treated with equality and respect.

She said Government through the ministry piloted the women’s economics support fund to encourage women’s entreprene­urs. This grant is for individual women who wish to apply and receive a grant of nearly $1000 to support and expand their already commenced own businesses.

The Club aims to engage in bee farming

The women’s club aims to venture into bee farming to raise funds to support their temple committee and community.

Ms Lata said their 14-member club had always shared the dream to be contributo­rs to their community with the income they generated. The club was formed nearly six months ago after the women realised the need to be under the shadow of the ministry.
