Qiri wins second Nadi Open title

Suva based golfer Poasa Qiri took out his second Nadi Open Amateur championsh­ip title at the Nadi Airport Golf club on Sunday.

The 43-year-old carded one under par 71 to claim the title he first won in 2009. Nadi businessma­n Abid Hussein shot even par 72.

The Nawaikama, Lomaiviti native has been in the sport the last 35 years but mastered it a decade ago. He was present at the Lautoka Open on Saturday to watch.

“My game plan was to be present at the Lautoka Open, not to play but to watch the golfers in action and then to win in Nadi,” he said.

He will compete in his final amateur during the Denarau Open 2022 next month.

Top local women golfer Raina Kumar (83) retained the women’s title again ahead of versatile Amy Subam (92). Nett winner Lowata Mataiki (69) and Seini Lewai (82).

Club secretary Mark Hinton said the tournament was a success; he thanked sponsors Coca Cola, Paradise Beverages, CSI Brokers for their support.

“We have nine holes in operation at the moment and competitio­n is improving all the time,” he said. “Nine holes is a struggle talks are underway to do up another nine holes to make it 18 holes.

Meanwhile, New Zealand based amateur Anuresh Chandra took out the Shop N Save Lautoka Open 2022 on Saturday.
