Late Savusavu Tourism Member Simon Hazelman Remembered Fondly

Rava Estate in Savusavu has lost a loved one in Simon Hazelman, who died at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva on November 27. He had dedicated the last 35 years of his working life to the tourism industry.

Mr Hazelman was a dialysis patient. His wife, Noleen Hazelman said: “He was working on his last Letters to the Editor, but he asked me to complete it as his health condition was not good. “He has been writing constructi­ve criticism pieces and opinions to the print media, Fiji Sun and Times since his 20s.”

She said even though he was busy in his career he would take out time to write.

“Even though he retired in 2012 after serving as a manager for Laucala Island Resort, he continued to write more frequently.”

She said even though he couldn’t complete his tertiary education at University of the South Pacific on tourism studies, he worked in the tourism industry to gain experience. “Since he loved the ocean, his last wish was to be buried at sea,” she said.

“Apart from being known as a writer, people knew him as a fisherman because he would always take out time to go fishing.”

The sea burial will take place on December 9 at his place in Savusavu.

He is survived by his wife, one daughter and two granddaugh­ters.

General manager, Poly Ciusia expects many bookings as Christmas draws near.
