Sathya Sai, Lautoka Arya Samaj Scoop Clean Schools Awards
Sathya Sai School and Lautoka Arya Samaj Primary School were crowned winners in the 2022 Lautoka Clean Schools Programme awards ceremony on Friday.
The ceremony which took place at the Sugar Cane Growers Council hall in Lautoka brought together supporters, teachers, students and heads of schools from the primary school division.
The annual programme was an initiative created by the Lautoka City Council 12 years ago.
A total of 30 schools took part in the programme where 12 schools were from the rural division while 18 schools represented the urban area.
The schools, through the initiative and commitment from the teachers and students took part in activities like recycling, composting and conducting environmental awareness.
Sathya Sai School head teacher, Ravindra Dutt said the award was no surprise to them.
Mr Dutt said he was confident to win the award because the school had been actively participating in activities.
“This was all part of our school culture, we never did recycling, composting and environmental awareness to win, we had always been doing it and it is no surprise to us that we won the award,” he said.
Chief guest, LCC head of services, Deepak Lal said the programme was an investment into the children’s lives becoming agents of change going forward with the right guidance.
“Like other environment initiatives of the LCC, the programme has been initiated as one of the road map in addressing the solid waste management problems,” said Mr Lal.
“We must all show concern on the improper management and disposal of utilized processed imported goods as it has the potential to impact some important sectors of our economy like tourism, cleanliness of our town’s food supplies and public health.”
LCC manager health services, Rouhit Singh encouraged the remaining number of Lautoka-based schools to take part in the programme next year.
