As of November 1, 2022 till to date, more than 500 prosthetic limbs have been fitted out in the Jaipur Foot Camp across the three locations (Labasa, Suva and Nadi) in Fiji.
Another 100 limbs will be fitted out over this week in Labasa before the camp moves for the final week in Suva.
High Commissioner of India to Fiji Palaniswamy Subramanyan Karthigeyan said this during the International Day for Persons with Disabilities celebration at Labasa School for Special Education last Saturday.
“The High Commission of India in Suva, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti (BMVSS), Jaipur (Rajasthan) is organising the Jaipur Foot Camp for fitment of artificial limbs to over 600 amputees in Fiji at three locations, namely Suva, Nadi and Labasa, from November 1 to December 17, 2022,” Mr Karthigeyan said.
“The camp is being organised on the request of the Government of the Republic of Fiji.”
He said this grant in aid project involving an expenditure of $670,000 has been fully funded by the Government of India as part of “India for Humanity’’ programme.
“Under this programme over 8,000 beneficiaries in 18 countries in Asia and Africa have already been rehabilitated, exemplifying India’s belief in ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ - the world is a family,” he said.
“The camps are aimed at providing physical, economic and social rehabilitation of the differently-abled by helping them regain their mobility and dignity to become self-respecting and productive members of the society.”
