Fiji in Tough Pool for Cape Town 7s

The Fiji Airways Fijian men’s rugby sevens team is in a tough pool in this weekend’s Cape Town Sevens tournament in South Africa.

The Ben Gollings-coached side is in Pool A along with Dubai Sevens champions and host South Africa, France along with Canada.

The Fijians finished ninth in Dubai and has dropped to fifth spot in the HSBC World Sevens Series points table.

Meanwhile, the Fijiana women’s sevens side got bundled out of the Cup quarterfin­al against Australia 38-21 but finished fifth with a 28-12 win over Ireland.

Fijiana are in Pool B for Cape Town 7s where they take on New Zealand, Great Britain and Brazil.

The men’s pool draw for Cape Town sees hosts South Africa in Pool A together with France, Fiji and Canada.

Pool B includes Ireland, Samoa, Uruguay and Japan. New Zealand are in Pool C alongside Argentina, Kenya and Spain while the USA, Australia, Great Britain and Uganda are in Pool D.

The women’s pools in Cape Town have all-conquering Australia drawn with Ireland, Spain and South Africa in Pool A.

New Zealand are in Pool B together with Fiji, Great Britain and Brazil. Pool C includes the USA, France, Canada and Japan.

Dubai 7s Results Women’s:

Fijiana 33-14 Japan, Fijiana 14-21 Spain, Fijiana 17-24 Ireland (Fiji qualified to Cup quarters as best placed third team).

Cup quarters: Fijiana 21-38 Australia; 5th place semifinal: Fijiana 26-5 Spain, 5th place final: Fijiana 28-12 Ireland.

Men’s: Fiji 52-0 Uruguay, Fiji 7-24 New Zealand, Fiji 17-12 Argentina.

9th place QF: Fiji 29-14 Uganda, 9th place SF: Fiji 21-17 Kenya, 9th place final: Fiji 49-0 Uruguay.
