LEVUKA HERITAGE LURES AMIRITA DEVI

- SOSIVETA KOROBIAU SUVA

Amirita Devi Lal’s story is a lesson in life that its never too late to start something new. She now makes and sells earrings, doll dresses and knitting textiles.

Ms Lal started selling pieces of her craft to her family and friends six years ago, and in the process began building her small business.

The 34-year-old said she knew how to use crochet hooks just by observing her aunties and grandmother while growing up.

She came up with the initiative to start her own business after giving birth to her second child in 2016.

She is sells her ware at the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) boulevard in Suva.

Ms Lal has been assisted by the Fiji Arts Council and the Women’s Ministry.

While selling at the boulevard, her hands were busy making at least five pieces of her craft such as doll dresses, milk bottle covers or earrings.

She encourages young people to step out and make use of the resources around them to earn an income.
