7 Years Sacrifice Pays off for Khan

- SALOTE QALUBAU LAUTOKA Edited by Maikeli Seru

Twenty-five-year-old Mohammed Rizwan Khan credited his family’s relentless support, which enabled him to graduate with a Bachelor in Medicine and Bachelor in Surgery (MBBS) degrees from the University of Fiji (Uni Fiji) on Friday.

“I couldn’t have done this without my dad, my mom, and my other family members,” he said after collecting the spoils of his seven years of study during the Uni Fiji graduation ceremony at the Saweni, Lautoka Campus.

“My family contributed towards my success and they always pray for me. My aunty, who is in the U.S., has always been supporting me and not forgetting my Almighty God, who gave me knowledge.”

Mr Khan was one of the 369 students who graduated from the campus.

“It’s been seven years here in the University of Fiji, so it’s six years of MBBS and I did another course which was Bachelor of Science previously for two years, so a total of seven years in this university.

“It was an amazing long journey which was completed today (yesterday). I am proud, happy and emotional, especially after all the sacrifice and hard work I put in.”

He is the elder of two children in his family. His parents live at Nausori and being away for seven years proved to be a challenge for him while renting in Lautoka, he said.

“The very first thing was staying away from my family. It was really hard staying away from them during examinations, keeping up with my assessments and then missing out on their birthdays but now I’ve achieved a greater milestone.”

He said he would now work towards achieving his goal to work at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva.

“Next year, I will be an intern. In the future, I would love to work in the cardiology side, more towards cardiologic programs. If further education has been provided in this university, I will not hesitate to come forward and do my further studies here or in Australia or maybe in the US,” he said.

His proud father Mohammed Raseed Khan said his eldest son had set a benchmark for his younger son.

“Today, I am a very proud father. For seven years he was away from me, but at one time, he was in Year Four, he said he wanted to leave, but we encouraged him to keep going,” Mr Raseed Khan said.
