Coconut Farmers to be Awarded

Coconut Millers exports 80 per cent of its production, including crude coconut oil to Indonesia, and virgin coconut oil to Australia and New Zealand. A $3.5 million profit was recorded for 2022, against $2.8 million last year.

Coconut farmers from Rotuma, Lomaiviti and Lau, are expected to join an inaugural presidenti­al awards that recognises their work.

As Savusavu prepares for the event, organisers are scouting for more sponsors and service providers in the areas of event organising and catering.

Fiji Coconut Millers Pte Ltd hascalled for expression­s of interes for the Presidenti­al Award For Coconut Farmers’ which will be held at Balaga Bay on January 20.

The awards are divided into six categories.

An estimated 150 guests are expected to attend.

Coconut Millers has over 200 registered farmers, of which 70 per cent are Cakaudrove-based copra producers.

The remaining farmers are scattered across Lau, Lomaiviti and Rotuma, general manager John Deo said.

Coconut Millers exports 80 per cent of its production, including crude coconut oil to Indonesia, and virgin coconut oil to Australia and New Zealand.

“The balance is sold locally, including by-products which goes to the local dairy industry,” Mr Deo said.

A $3.5 million profit was recorded for 2022, against $2.8 million last year, he said.

By the first quarter of 2023, a boiler valued at $250,000 will be commission­ed in Vanua Levu, Mr Deo said.

“For the most part of the rest of next year, barring major damage to farms its business as usual,” he said.
