‘Drop in Business’

- FREDERICA ELBOURNE Feedback: frederica.elbourne@fijisun. com.fj

Tightening of purse strings was obvious this year, as consumers budgeted on spending habits, Suva Retailers Association has reported.

“There was a drop in business, compared to last year,” association president, Jitesh Patel said.

“But other activities, such as nightclubbing, continued its usual end of year trend.

“It helps that we have visible police presence, and the Christmas theme at Suva’s Civic Centre.”

This Christmas, more consumers purchased stationery as Christmas gifts, in preparation for the new school year.

“Items are cheaper at this time of the year, when you consider the school calendar starts early next year,” Mr Patel said.

On another note, the association has called for the formation of the next Government at the soonest, to improve consumer confidence.

“The more they invest, the better the country,” Mr Patel said.

“We expect prices to reduce, or be maintained, next year.”

Sigatoka Town

The coastal town of Sigatoka has also reported cautious spending habits.

But mindful spending was encouraged against the global economic outlook, Nadroga Navosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry president, Dr Ashank Naidu, said.

He urged consumers to commence precautionary measures against the outbreak of the next wave of COVID.

“People need to start wearing masks again,” he said.

“Don’t be complacent.

“Two years ago, I said the same thing – for people to get ready; see what happened.

“We weren’t prepared.”

Dr Naidu said the new wave of COVID was costing the lives and wellbeing of the younger generation.

“When the season changes, it may intensify,” Dr Naidu said.

Mounting global reports on the new COVID wave should compel individuals to also take booster shots, he said.

Town

At this time of the year, the jetset town of Nadi is usually a sea of colours.

That was not the reality this week, the Nadi Town Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said.

“It’s like another day in June, not Christmas,” spokesperson Prasant Naidu, said.

“Children are usually in town around this time; this season, they’re all home.”
