Government to seek legal advice before changes

- NACANIELI TUILEVUKA SUVA Edited by Maikeli Seru

Government will first seek legal advice before changing the management boards and executive positions of government statutory bodies.

This was the statement made by the Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau yesterday. He said this was an area of concern that they were looking at.

Ro Filipe said he was looking at changing the management board and executive positions within the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF). “But, we await the guidance of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka,” he said.

He said they needed to ensure due processes were being followed before people are removed as management board members and from executive positions.

Water cuts

Ro Filipe said other areas of concern for Government included the continuous water cuts.

“I spoke to the Water Authority of Fiji chief executive officer Dr Amit Chanan on this and thanked him for his reaction,” he said.

He said he had discussions with Dr Chanan on ways to address the issue because they did not want people to be without water for days.

“We need to have a quick assessment on areas that have been facing water problems and the ways we can address the issues they are facing,” Ro Filipe said.

He said he had received affirmation that water trucks had been servicing affected areas.

Staff contracts

The top priority for Ro Filipe is to renew the contracts of the staff of his ministry.

He said there were contracts of staff members pending to be renewed which he needed to be resolved as soon as possible.

“We touched on various areas that we were concerned about and they were very happy with my response. There is a need to work together in terms of staff morale.

“You may understand that it is a very technical area and there is a scarce skill in these areas,” he said. He said there was a need to resolve this as soon as possible to ensure the ministry achieved its objectives and goals next year.
