Expect a packed Lawaka

Park in Sigatoka during the 2023 McDonald’s Fiji’s Coral Coast Sevens at Lawaqa Park Sigatoka from January 12 – 14.

Coral Coast 7s chairman Jay Whyte confirmed yesterday that spectators will not be charged entry fees over the three days.

“Thanks to the sponsors McDonald’s we are able to offer free entry for the spectators,” Whyte said.

“It’s a wonderful experience and great opportunit­y for Fijians who don’t have television in their homes, they can come down and watch for free,” he said.

“We hope that we will have a good tournament with a lot of exciting surprises.”

He added Police is the defending men’s champions while the Fijiana team is the defending women’s champion. “Big names have submitted their names to face-off defending champions Police Blue,” he said.

There are three divisions: men, women and Under-19. “The Australian Women’s Developmen­t team, Australian youth, Japanese youth, a team from Indonesia and the USA South 7s and the men’s developmen­t side are coming for tournament.

“There is a good number of teams coming from overseas to be part of this tournament. “Teams and people from around the world know that

Fiji is the best place to test themselves in sevens rugby. “The overseas teams will use the tournament to test their players and combinatio­ns.

“For Fijian players this is a perfect opportunit­y to show their talents and get picked for the Fiji 7s squad.

“It is also a chance for young players to play in a big tournament in front of a huge crowd.

“The Fiji 7s youth team will be participat­ing for the first time.”
