Boy, 9, Hailed a Hero for Saving His Grandmother from Burning Home
Anine-year-old boy of Ba has been hailed a hero after his act of bravery saved his grandmother from their burning four-bedroom home.
Police have acknowledged the brave act displayed by Pranav Kumar Deo of Raviravi, Ba, who ran about two kilometres to reach the nearest home to raise the alarm that their home was on fire.
Police said Pranav ran to ask for assistance from his other family members to save his grandmother, 62-year-old Premila Wati.
The fire started around midday on Thursday.
Being in a state of shock, Ms Wati panicked and collapsed on the porch when the fire had just started.
Pranav’s mother, Ashwini Nath, said although the family was still devastated about losing everything in the home, she was a proud mother because of her son’s bravery. Ms Nath said she was at work at the time of the alleged incident while Pranav and his grandmother were alone at home.
She claimed the fire started from the back of the home.
“The power had gone off and my son (Pranav) went to my motherin-law (Premila) to tell her,” she said.
“After that, my mother-in-law (Ms Wati) saw fire from the back of the home, he (Pranav) went inside to get his tablet and tried to dial 911. “He told her (grandmother) that the call couldn’t go through, so he told her that he was going to run to his other grandmother’s home. He reached the house and told my sister-in-law and her son that our house had caught fire.
“From there, my sister-in-law called the fire brigade and Police. I am proud of my son, he was smart and courageous enough to tell my family to save his grandmother. He saved himself too,” she said.
“He even tried to reach me at work.”
Ms Nath said her mother-in-law was well and back at home.
The estimated cost of damage for the family home is about $45,000. Pranav is a Year Five student at Karavi Primary School in Ba. Wikipedia reports that most people should be able to run two kilometres between 11-15 minutes. The family is currently staying with relatives.
