The South Pacific Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Nadi will soon open a stroke and rehabilitation centre. Institute director and Dean, Dr Zhihui Tu revealed this yesterday. He has been serving in Nadi for the past seven years and had been involved in outreach government programmes.

He works with the University of the South Pacific Lautoka Campus in providing Chinese traditional medicine and healing short courses.

Dr Tu said the initiative was to curb stroke from affecting people and to teach treatments through Chinese traditional methods, medicines and herbs.

“We plan to open our stroke and rehabilitation centre as soon as we get our equipment,” he said.

“We can say that we have the cure for stroke. For this rehabilitation, we will use treatments such as acupuncture, tuina (medical massage), cupping, rehabilitation training, physio exercise, food control, healthy lifestyle control and herbal medicines.

“Simply we will teach them how to walk, how to sit and how to exercise and what to eat to help them

recover quickly. This is a good opportunity to educate more people in Chinese medicine and for them to learn healthy living styles for themselves and their families.” Last November, Dr Tu signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with USP to include short courses in Chinese medicines and traditional healing at the Lautoka campus and his institute.

“These courses include Age Care Training, Children Service Training and Basic Counseling Skills Training and Healing Massage Techniques,” said Dr Tu. He said the Age Care program provided a deeper understanding in the care of elderly people. “The entry requirement for training is for students to have two or three years of relevant industry experience or Year 12 pass.

Dr Tu said the fee for the twoday training would be $250 and the dates were yet to be confirmed for next month. Furthermore, he said the Children Service Training would help participants understand the ongoing challenge of children’s learning and enabled them to know children’s developments and be equipped with the best knowledge in child work.

“This training is one-day training and the fee is $200. Basic Counseling Skills Training costs $180 and it is one-day training. The Introduction to Chinese Healing Massage Techniques course costs $350. The enrolment for the short courses is now open.”
