Prepare yourselves before its too late: Chand
As people have welcomed the year 2023, they should also be mindful that the cyclone season still remains.
It is urged to be prepared and careful than to be hasty and so do something later you may later regret.
Dany Chand, 41 of Viseisei Back Road, Lautoka said he had already put up shutters and stored clean water in advance. “Even though, our area is not badly flooded or damaged, I cannot afford to risk the lives of my family,” he said. Mr Chand said he would keep the shutters up until the threat of cyclone and flooding is not gone.
“People may start preparing themselves the very last minute but that’s when panic occurs and we tend to forget other important things like buying torch and batteries,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Weather office in Nadi has issued a heavy rain alert in most parts of the country and flash flooding in low lying areas, the Chief Operations Officer (COO) Acting Assistant Commissioner of Police (A/ACP) Livai Driu is urging members of the public to take all necessary safety precautionary measures and keep safe in light of the current weather spell.
She said wrong decisions could result in injuries or loss of life and is calling on all
Fijians to exercise caution and listen to advisories issued by stakeholders.
“As rain is forecasted to affect most of the Fiji group, parents and guardians are advised to strictly monitor their children’s movement as children are highly likely to play and swim in flooded areas,” A/ACP Driu said.
“Motorists are advised to drive with precaution and maintain safe distance between your cars because, the risk of collision increases during rains due to slick roads, less visibility.
“Please continue to follow advisories and take necessary safety precautionary measures.”
