Off-load King Tuwai Challenges 7s Players

- WAISEA NASOKIA SIGATOKA Edited by Karalaini Waqanidrola

Former Fiji Airways sevens forward Pio Tuwai believes the current Fiji sevens team is getting boring in their games so far this season. He made the comments following the national sevens failure to register a win in the World Sevens series so far – Fiji finished in unhealthy positions the last three HSBC sevens legs.

Tuwai, also known as ‘off-load king’ adds that Fiji needs to be psyched up to be in the top four to cement a spot for the Paris Olympics in Fiji.

“Fiji is yet to win one series so far and they are trying to qualify for the Olympics,” Tuwai said. “I have been watching the games they play and for me personally some players show no drive. They are getting boring and predictable.

“It is true we are witnessing new players, they are good but some tend not to want to spend more time around; any offer for a contract they move on to greener pastures.”

Tuwai added every player should be the missing a piece or link to the puzzle, the missing link provides continuity otherwise the mechanics of the team struggle to find form.

“For me personally, if I have been chosen by the management and coach, I will make sure that I’m mentally and physically fit for the job. Trust the system and the coach who has given you the task to accomplish.

“With the number of games and series played, some players need to prove themselves to justify their selection. The series is underway and it is a different ball game altogether, compared to the local tournaments. Players must get into it right away and trust the system.

“To be in the top four is possible – players must prepare well and go for the win.”

Yesterday the Votua, Ba native featured for the Pacific Nomads that defeated Ratu Filise 10-5 in the opening rounds of the men’s division of the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast Sevens at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka.
