Shopping for school stationery this year will be much easier for school teacher Vijaylachmi Prasad. With the help of the $200 back-to-school support per child that was announced by the Coalition Government, Mrs Prasad is able to save up for her daughter’s stationery for the following school term.

Mrs Prasad had already bought her daughter’s stationaries last year before the back-to-school support was announced.

“I will keep it for term two expenses or any other need arises for my child’s school needs during term one,” she said.

Mrs Prasad is an English teacher at Adi Cakobau School while her husband is a police officer. She said despite being both employed, the cost of stationery and food items was expensive to match.

“Cost of living is very high compared to past few years where cost of the stationaries was affordable, and parents were able to cater for their children,” she said.

“It’s an extra burden for the parents nowadays to cope with the little pay and to send their children to school with proper educational needs.”

Mrs Prasad’s daughter is an only child and is a Year 4 student at Vunimono Primary School.

She said the back-to-school support was timely and a relief for parents.

“Especially for those who have more children to support and I thank the Government of the day for such a timely support.

“It is a great help for parents who are the sole breadwinners, single parents.

“In my years teaching, I have seen some students come to school without proper water bottles, shoes, etc and now with the assistance, they can afford to have these things on time before school starts.”

The new academic year begins on February 6.
