Afamily returning from a fishing trip were astounded when they found the body of an infant floating motionless near a small bridge that leads to the Nadawa Settlement.

Sainimili Suvewa, a resident of Veiraisi Settlement, who found the infant, said they left around 8am yesterday to go out fishing, accompanied by her son and sister-in-law.

“Upon returning from our fishing trip we stopped the boat because I wanted to pull the plastic that was stuck near the mangrove swamp, but to my surprise, the baby just floated out,” Ms Suvewa said.

“I thought it was a doll, but my sister-in-law said that it was not a doll, but a human baby.”

The 42-year-old mother of three children said when she realised that it was a small baby, she quickly picked her (baby) up thinking that it was still alive.

“I did what any mother would do, to try and save a child, but not knowing it was too late,” she said.

“I cried as I carried her up from the mangrove, I didn’t know what else to say. I didn’t put her back in the water, but brought her home before calling the Police.”

Ms Suvewa had wrapped the infant’s lifeless body properly when she was brought to her home then police were notified.

“The Police asked why I touched the body so I told them that I thought the baby was still alive so I could try help revive the baby,” she said.

“As a mother it breaks my heart to experience what I went through.” She urged young women to seek help so that such setbacks could be prevented.

“I know that there are people and organisations out there ready to help, please seek help if you need it and don’t bottle your problem,” Ms Suvewa said.

Police confirmed that incident yesterday.
