Sevens living Legend Nagasau leads again

The new medal named FWCC Rusila Nagasau Medal was presented to the women’s player of the tournament in the ShangriLa Women’s Division at the 2023 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast Sevens.

Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s captain Rusila Nagasau leads her side again at this weekend’s Hamilton sevens in New Zealand after missing out on selection for the Dubai and Cape Town tournament­s on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series last month.

Nagasau will also lead the Fijiana 7s to next weekend’s Sydney 7s in Australia.

She leads the 13-member side that includes Talei Wilson, Iva mere Nabura, Vani Buleki, Raijeli Daveua, Reapi Uluinisau, Lavena Cavuru, Ana Maria Naimasi, Ilisapeci Delaiwau, Viniana Riwai, Younis Bese, Vasiti Solikoviti and Maria Rokotuisig­a.

Hamilton is the third stop on the Women’s HSBC 2023 World Series with Australia and New Zealand tied at the top of the standings after winning titles in Dubai and Cape Town respective­ly.

USA and France lead the rest of the teams in the race for the top four crucial for 2024 Olympic Qualificat­ion.

In the women’s pools New Zealand is drawn in Pool A alongside Great Britain, Fiji and invitation team Papua New Guinea.

Black Ferns Sevens head coach Cory Sweeney said: “To be back playing in a World Series event on our whenua since 2020 is incredibly exciting. The team has been looking

forward to competing on home turf, in front of their wh nau and fans.”

Series defending champions Australia are in Pool B with France, Canada and the Asian representa­tion Japan. The USA will be aiming for their third straight podium finish in Hamilton and are in Pool C with Ireland, Brazil and Spain.

Meanwhile Nagasau was recognised for her dedication and service to the women’s rugby game in Fiji along with great career achievemen­ts which includes a bronze medal win in the Tokyo Olympics and a silver medal in the Birmingham Commonweal­th Games.

A star and a living legend of the women’s game in Fiji, she was honoured at the recent McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast sevens at Lawaqa, Sigatoka. The new medal named FWCC Rusila Nagasau Medal was presented to the women’s player of the tournament in the Shangri-La Women’s Division.
