Sayed-Khaiyum: A-G Turaga’s request is ‘quite pedestrian’
FijiFirst general secretary Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has labelled the call by Attorney-General Siromi Turaga in inviting him to file for constitutional redress as “quite pedestrian.”
Mr Sayed-Khaiyum, after spending 6-hours at the Fiji Police Force CID Headquaters did not make a clear indication to whether he would be filing for a constitutional redress. Mr Turaga encouraged Mr SayedKhaiyum to prove his accusations accusations of constitutional breaches by the Coalition Government.
In a press conference over the weekend, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum alleged that Government had violated the separation of powers on numerous occasions.
While Mr Sayed Khaiyum chose not to comment he said, if government knew that certain actions could be a direct breach of the constitution then they should refrain from committing the breaches.
He said they had highlighted that certain actions and comments made, were of direct contravention of the provisions of the Constitution.
“I also highlighted the values and principles, for example that are enshrined in section one of the Fijian Constitution that they must adhere to,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. Practically, the doctrine of separation of powers divides the institution of Government, which is the legislative, executive and judicial, he said. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said all three arms of government had limited powers.
“In the same way just because you’re the minister or just because you’re the Prime Minister, just because you’re the Permanent Secretary it does not mean you can do anything you like. You’re guided by certain rules.”
