Australia Day was celebrated at the Marriott International Fiji yesterday with a tennis clinic for guests at Momi Bay.

The clinic was hosted by former national rep Krishneel Kumar and his local community with the Viti Tennis Academy.

Kumar founded the academy 18 years ago for training and competitive tennis for local and international tournaments.

“Viti Tennis Academy was founded based on my passion for the sport. I am anxious to share my skills and knowledge with the guests; for this particular moment it is exciting as we head into witnessing the 2023 Australian Open finals,” Kumar said.

The Marriott Bonvoy, the hotel loyalty programme that rewards loyal guests at their 7000+ hotels worldwide is also a major sponsor of the Australian Tennis Open. Resort general manager Silvano Dressino said, “Centred around the concept of community, we are really looking forward to sharing with the locals this unique partnership involving VTA.

“Our Australian guests actively learn and enjoy tennis while on holiday and at the same time build up to the excitement of watching the Australian Open finals.”

The tennis clinics are popular that at the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay 40 guests have registered.

Multi Property Vice President Fiji & Samoa, Marriott International, General Manager Westin and Sheraton Resorts, Fiji Complex Neeraj Chadha, said: “Our celebration in the lead up to the Australian Open finals acknowledges the importance of the Australian market for Marriott Fiji.” Following the tennis clinic, VTA hosted friendly matches followed by the prize giving ceremony.

The 2023 Australian Open finals start Sunday, January 29. It is the 111th edition of the tournament, the 55th edition in the Open Era, and the first major of the year.
