Former national footballer laid to rest
The Labasa community yesterday laid to rest one of its famous football sons Jimmy Zoing.
Zoing, 77, is remembered as one of Labasa’s fastest and fittest players in his prime. He also represented Fiji Football in the 1970s and 80s.
During the eulogy Zoing was described as a never-tiring trainer, whose physique and fitness levels became an inspiration to others.
Yesterday his sister, Selina Lee Wah, said it was a sad moment to lose a father-like figure like Jimmy.
“Jimmy was a family-oriented man, who prioritised family, his passing away has left a huge vacuum,” Selina said.
She said Zoing’s passion for football was extraordinary as he devoted a reasonable period of his time perfecting his game to win games for Labasa.
As managing director of the Labasa Butchery Shop in town, Zoing was a jovial and friendly person and was easily approached by friends, families, teammates and supporters.
Simon Zoing, who also represented the Babasiga Lions, described his elder brother as one who encouraged him to play football.
Zoing played alongside talented and legendary players like Anand Sami, Kasimiro Dinono, Gordon Leewai, Brian Simmons, Mike Jones and Sam Lee Wah.
“A great brother, friend, a family committed father-like figure and someone close to our hearts,” he said.
Jimmy was the eldest of the five Zoing brothers: Alfie, Maxie, Rexie, Simon and George.
Former Labasa right-wing, Kamlesh Reddy, said the late Zoing was always looked up to as an inspiration.
Reddy said Zoing was a lethal striker who mesmerised defenders with his quick ball work and bulletlike shots at goal.
Reddy wore a Labasa jersey yesterday to bid farewell to the once-great Babasiga player.
Zoing was inducted into the Fiji FA Legends Club by Fiji Football president, Rajesh Patel, during the Fiji FACT tournament in 2020. Zoing’s resurrection mass was held at the Holy Family Parish before he was laid to rest at the Valebasoga Chinese Cemetery.
