China-Fiji relations

There have been much debate and controversy as to whether Fiji’s debt level is too high.

With the willingness of the executives of the Fiji Government and World Bank to speak openly about our high debt, Fijians will better understand the need for a more efficient budget that may well cause taxpayers some pain.

Growth in our various economic sectors will be a key element.

China is our good friend and they have reaffirmed this on many occasions. They have publicly stated their willingness to assist Fiji. For many years, I have wondered why Fiji could not obtain landing rights for Fiji Airways to make return flights to Beijing, Shanghai or another eastern port city – reciprocal rights.

Is it because there were objections by other Chinese airlines? But this would be a reciprocal agreement – far to both parties. Are they asking for fifth freedom rights, but Fiji has not asked for nor need it?

Chinese airlines should be committed and devoted to this market; investing resources to market and promote growth. This would be fair competition.

They should not seek undue advantage against a small island airline by asking for fifth freedom rights.

Shame on them seeking an advantage and blocking an agreement that would improve our friendly relationship.

This bullying tactics should not be taken against a friendly, small and developing country.

Why have our previous Government not gone up with cup in hand asking for this right? As our very good friend, China has asked how they could assist our coalition Government.

Please, make a friendly and humble request for this right so as to help our economy meet debt payments – lest we default.

I am sure a good friend would be willing to help especially when we have a dire need for this assistance. They will not need to make grants or soft loans requiring cash up front. In addition, would this not further the objectives of their Belt and Road initiative? Two birds with one stone – a win-win situation.
