The Acting Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica held a press conference on Friday addressing some key issues.

PM in Panama

Mr Kamikamica said soon after chairing the Pacific Islands Forum’s Leaders Special Retreat in Nadi, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka left to attend the Oceans Conference in Panama.

“The health of the Pacific Ocean is vitally important for us. It is a source of livelihood to many of us. It holds the only healthy stock of tuna in the world,” Mr Kamikamica said. “It forms a key part of the PIF 2050 strategy emphasising the preservation, protection and security of the ocean and our people. “Most of us, if not all, are culturally connected to it.”

Perception of Corruption in Parliament and Police:

Mr Kamikamica was asked about the perception of the public that the Members of Parliament and the Fiji Police Force were reported the most corrupted as per the Corruptions Perceptions Index 2021 report. Mr Kamikamica said the Code of Conduct was supposed to be introduced in Parliament, but that did not get done. However, this Government would put it in place.

“My colleagues and I plan to do things correctly, ethically and with integrity as these are important values for us,” Mr Kamikamica said. “One thing about history is you can learn from it. While you are trying to fix the mess, you can learn from it and try to put in place mechanisms that will make things better.

“It’s our job to try and regain the trust and confidence of the people of Fiji and as such, we are sticking to our words of 100 days initiative.”
