But for Jason Sami and Warsha Kumar, it only took the first 15 years of their lives to know they were made for each other.

Their love story began as Year 9 students on the corridors of their school in DAV College, Nabua, when a young Jason spotted the beautiful and elegant Warsha.

“One glance was all it took,” Mr Sami said, now 24 years old.

Their journey seemed like the perfect introductory plot to a fairytale story, a Hollywood or Bollywood teen flick, you’d think never happens in real life.

On the contrary, it did for them.

“I vividly recall making excuses to teachers to go to the toilet only to pass her classroom just to glance at her while classes were going,” he said. “Isn’t that crazy? To me she is the one.”

Stealing more glances then turned into shy and small chats in between classes, sharing meals during lunch which was enough to tell anyone that they were officially a power couple.

Sure enough, like the twists and turns in the scripts of that teen movie, theirs was no different.

It was in Year 12 when Mr Sami’s parents decided to move to greener pastures in the United States.

“It was devastating and I cried and cried knowing I had to leave her behind,” he said. “It devastated Warsha too, but as the saying goes ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder,’ we promised each other to keep our love alive. “We kept in touch all the time.” And every year after that Mr Sami would travel more than 10,000km back home to keep that ‘first glance’ moment alive. “We missed each other so much. I would come back just to spend time with her,” he said. Mr Kumar went on to become the operations supervisor for internationally-renowned FedEx Freight Services in Sacramento. In 2016, they were engaged at the Albert Park Hall in Suva. That became the cornerstone of building their commitment for one another. And so that sacrifice, the investment and the pact a decade ago culminated in an intimate Christian wedding at the Central Cuisine Restaurant at the Sports City Complex, last month. The couple plan to return to the US to start a family of their own.
