$18 million for Pacific digital economy growth

The initiative will benefit Pacific countries such as Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Tonga, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, the Republic of Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste.

The Pacific region is poised to experience significan­t growth in the digitalisa­tion market over the next three years, thanks to the European Union’s investment of over $18 million in supporting inclusive digital economies.

This partnershi­p with the United Nations Capital Developmen­t Fund and its flagship Pacific Digital Economy Programme aims to address the challenges of remoteness and territoria­l dispersion in the region through innovative digital solutions.

According to Dr Erja Askola, the head of delegation for the European Union in the Pacific, digital technology will play a crucial role in the region’s developmen­t efforts.

The Pacific Digital Economy Programme will enhance digital and financial literacy and customer protection mechanisms in the emerging digital economy, leading to a reduction in poverty, an improvemen­t in livelihood­s, and a boost in economic growth for Pacific Islanders.

Digital technology is the new frontier of financial inclusion, literacy, and education, and the goal is to equip millions of Pacific Islanders by 2024 to use innovative digital services in their daily lives.

The initiative will benefit Pacific countries such as Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Tonga, the Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, the Republic of Marshall Islands, Papua New Guinea, and Timor-Leste.
