Women play important role in society: Shandil

“Just like cells are building block of life, the basic unit of society is a woman” A woman makes a family, family makes a home and homes make a society.

This was shared by the Consumer Council of Fiji chief executive officer, Seema Shandil while she expressed her thoughts about equality to equity for women around the globe.

“Even in this day and age, the hurdles which a woman faces may place them at a disadvantage compared to its counterparts,” she said. “This is because women are still subjected to stereotypes such as they should be the ones doing household chores, taking care of children or cooking for family.

“This is in addition to their day jobs; whether it be a Chief Executive Officer, an entrepreneur or a market vendor.

“So, we need to shift the focus from just equality to equity; in order to ensure that women have the relevant resources, skills and most importantly support which they have rightfully earned; because let’s face it; at the end of the day, women do much more than men – their working hours is never 8am – 5pm; its 24/7.”

About Mrs Shandil

After serving as a teacher for more than a decade, Mrs Shandil joined the Reserve Bank of Fiji as an Economist followed by Manager Research and Product Development at Fiji National Provident Fund.

“I am proud to say that I am from a modest and hardworking family; part of high achievement parenting who realised the importance of girls’ education in order to ensure that we prevail in life,” she said.

“I have been very fortunate to be molded from a very young age to tackle challenges head-on and always fight for what is right, persevere in any environment and recognise that men and women are equal.

“I am married to a very supportive husband, also pillar of my success and proud mom of two boys.”

Leadership roles

Mrs Shandil said her work life was very interesting and challenging at times. “However, being an acclimatised leader who is able to negate through novel and demanding challenges makes work very rewarding. Being a consumer advocate, I have the honor of serving the single most influential cohorts – CONSUMERS,” she said.

“Upon taking the helm of the Council over four years ago, I get to learn and acquire new things on a daily basis. Being able to protect and empower consumers is the most rewarding part of this job.”

She also said as a working woman, she had first-hand experience with making every effort to cater for the multiple roles; as a spouse, a Chief Executive and a mother. “I believe it takes proper planning of your day-to-day activities and constant support from your family members to make it work,” Mrs Shandil added.

“Many working women do not get that support they need from their families or even their spouses, and this hinders their success and diminishes their spirits.

“Do not forget that at the end of the day, every woman needs to make time for herself, you can take a walk or enjoy a good book but giving yourself the care you need, will allow you to cope with any challenges you may face.”

Message to family, parents and society

“Let me reflect on women being agents of change at home,” Mrs Shandil said.

She said the greatest effect we could have in fostering gender equality in whatever aspect of life, lies, in ensuring that our children were reared to respect and support women. “In order for children to become well-rounded, it is essential that they learn the importance of showing respect,” she said. “Teaching your sons and daughters to respect women starts at an early age and as parents, your influence is crucial.

“The example you set at home – the bond between a mother and son, the respect a father shows his wife – will affect your children’s perception of respect. Remember; gender education also begins at home.”

To all female out there

Mrs Shandil encouraged all the females out there to maintain persistence despite failures.

“Stay committed to your dreams and prioritise what is important to you,” she said. “Empower each other in everyday life.

“You don’t have to conquer the world, just find your power and say that oh, I can do this too.

“Find the confidence and succeed and nothing will stop you from reaching greater heights.”
