Electric charging station soon
Total Energies will have electric vehicle charging stations soon in its service stations around the countty to meet the growing demand.
It was a way forward towards decarbonising Fiji’s land transport sector, Total Energies rep Jese Tikomailepanoni said. The company’s vision of creating a systematic change in the transport industry fits well with the Government’s commitment in reducing Fiji’s carbon footprint, he said.
Mr Tikomailepanoni said the company was working towards renewable energy. “People may have bought electric cars due to the hike in fuel prices,” he said. “This is an area the company was working towards.”
He was speaking at the Fiji Rental Car Association annual general meeting at Kshatriya Hall, Suva, yesterday. Currently, 18 of its service stations have solar power.
“Our aim is by the end of the year, 22 service stations will be generated by solar energy,” he said.
Rental car companies could contribute towards this by offering electric or hybrid cars that emit fewer pollutants and require less fuel, Tourism Fiji chief executive officer Brent Hill said.
He said Tourism Fiji had already taken the lead by opting for electric vehicles for its company fleet, which would be changed this year.
“One of our key strategies at Tourism Fiji is to promote sustainable tourism,” Mr Hill said.
“This includes reducing the impact of tourism on the environment, supporting local communities, and preserving cultural heritage.
Fiji Rental Car Association president Shalit Kumar said it was an area rental companies were working towards.
Half of the rental companies in Fiji had hybrid cars which emitted less pollutants.
