Safe Easter up North, Zero Fatal Incidents
No fatal incidents were recorded during the long Easter weekend in the Northern Division, declared the Fiji Police Force.
There were no motor vehicle accidents leading to death, drowning and other forms of crime-related deaths.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said apart from no fatal incidents, the vehicle fire in Labasa Town was the only case of interest. Ms Naisoro said they continued to investigate the cause of the fire that led to the vehicle engulfed in flames with nothing left to save. This incident happened on Easter Sunday at the Gurbachan Singh mall complex in Labasa.
“There was no report of major injuries from the incident and the owner had visited a doctor for checkup after trying to jump start the car when the incident initially started,” she said.
Duavata Northern Crime Prevention committee chairperson Satish Kumar welcomed the fatal and robbery-free Easter weekend in the greater Labasa area and rest of the Northern Division.
Mr Kumar, also the Labasa Chamber of Commerce and Industries president, said business operators enjoyed a crime-free business environment during the Easter weekend.
He said there were 56 active crime prevention committees around Labasa.
“We are looking at increasing more crime prevention committees this year to assist Police with more crime eradication attempts,” he said.
He encouraged people in areas where there was no crime prevention committees to form one to raise awareness and assist people with critical information.
Other crimes
Meanwhile, Police received a report of an alleged defilement that occurred last month.
The report was lodged at the Labasa Police Station during the Easter weekend.
Ms Naisoro said the report involved a 14-year-old victim who alleged the offence was committed by her stepfather.
“Investigation into the allegation continues,” she said.
She reminded Parents to closely monitor their children and ensure they return to school today (Tuesday) safely and in sound health.
