Marist Dethrones Champs, Wins Zone

Marist Brothers High School dethroned Suva Zone 2 defending champions Suva Grammar winning the boys division and returning to Flagstaff with 72 medals.

The Red Fire boys won 27 gold medals, 25 silver and 20 bronze while SGS collected 17 gold, 20 silver and 17 bronze.

With Marist dominating the day Gospel High School came third with two gold medals, one silver and two bronze while Lomary Catholic Secondary returned to Galoa with one gold, two silver and five bronze.

SGS coach Jone Delai said although his school won both the senior boys and girls’ blue ribbon event he was far from being content with the performanc­e of his athletes.

Speaking to SUNsports, Delai said his squad did not have a good off season training programme.

“We were behind in our preparatio­n which just started in the third week of school when we got everybody together for our inter house,” said Delai.

The SGS girls returned to Veiuto once again winners of the girls division after winning 30 gold, 19 silver and 18 bronze medals. St Joseph’s Secondary School came second with 15 gold, 17 silver the boys were playand eight bronze medals.

Serua schools Lomary and Ratu Latianara came third and fourth respective­ly. Lomary bagged four gold, six silver and four bronze while Ratu Latianara won one gold, four silver and one bronze.

“Some of our girls also play rugby so they train with them for two days and the rest of the days with us,” Delai said.

The Marist Athletics team faced many hurdles during their preparatio­n phase according to coach meet.

“We are taking these challenges one at a time. Our main goal this year is to improve from where we left of,” Marist coach Antonio Raboiliku said.

The Marist Athletics team is building up on a three year plan, it is hoping to make the top 5 in the Coca-Cola games.

“Whatever we do, we do our best. I’m sure whatever bonus comes our way we’ll appreciate it,” he said. Gospel coach Sekove Vadei Jnr said they were positive coming to the zone.

“Our plan was to just field all the athletes and see how we perform in the events, see our strengths and prepare ourselves for the Cokes,” said Vadei.

The third candidate is the current FRU board member Tevita Tuiloa who stepped down from being the interim FRU CEO after declaring his interest to apply for the job.

Acting FRU CEO Sale Sorovaki said they were expecting the announceme­nt of the CEO after the April 29 AGM.

“Right now everything is handled by the board and I don’t have a thing on it,” the former Flying Fijians captain said.
