Triple N Zone schools on track for Cokes

- Ronald Kumar IOANE ASIOLI Edited by Leone Cabenatabua

Majority of the secondary schools in the country will be focused in training their athletes as they race against time since the Coca-Cola Games will be held on April 27-29 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Adi Cakobau School (ACS) media liaison officer Kavuama Latilevu said they are thankful to the ACS Old Girls Association and the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) in hiring the services of head coach Makelesi Bulikiobo and assistant Vaciseva Tavaga to help prepare their athletes.

Bulikiobo is a former Pacific sprint queen at the 2003 Pacific Games while Tavaga was the country’s top women sprinter in the 1990s. “We count ourselves lucky as we have two former sprint queens coaching the girls this year.

“We are also supporting them with whatever plans and strategy that they have for us to prepare ourselves especially for the Coke Games,” said Latilevu.

The girls from Sawani have fired a warning shot to other schools that they are serious about defending the Coke Games girl’s division title.

This was after they successfully defended the Triple N Zone girl’s title by winning an impressive 72 medals. In their dominance, ACS also broke six records at the Triple N Zone.

ACS is expected to face a tough challenge from Jasper Williams High School of Lautoka, St Joseph’s Secondary School and Suva Grammar School.

Nakasi High gracious in defeat

Underdogs Nakasi High School lost the boy’s title to Lelean Memorial School in the Triple N Zone but remain optimistic of doing well at the Coca-Cola Games.

Speaking to SUNsports, school principal, Praveen Chand said he’s proud that they are a well-balanced institution since they have performed well in sports and academic work. “We also have formed the Nakasi Club and it’s not only for Nakasi High School but for the entire community of Nakasi,” he said. The club also includes primary school students who can train with them for an easier transition to the high school system.

“We will go into another mode of training because the Games has been shifted a week earlier.

“We will have to lift our training to another level because the Coke Games is a different ball game when compared to the Triple N Zone.” said Chand.
