Lions stay on course for FACT

- SAMPRAS ANAND Edited by Leone Cabenatabua

The Labasa football team has got seven points on the Digicel Fiji Premier League and is now in fourth place.

This was after the Johan Leewaicoached side walloped Dai-ichi West sponsored- Ba side 3-0 at Subrail Park, Labasa, on Saturday. It was Ba’s first loss in the competition. “We came prepared with a plan to win and we executed our game plan well,” Leewai said.

He said the win would improve their chances of making the top eight and qualify for the Digicel Fiji FACT tournament.

A disappointed Ba coach, Imdad Ali, was unhappy with the referee’s decisions.

“We received yellow cards for fouls, which were questionable, however, when Labasa players fouled my players they were spared,” he said. Ali also said the ground condition was horrible and the game should not have gone ahead.

Labasa led 2-0 at halftime with goals from Lekima Gonerau and Rusiate Doidoi, both came from the penalty spot. In the second half it was veteran defender Akeimi Ralulu who tapped in the third goal.

Defender saves the day

Meanwhile, a last-minute goal from centre back, Unaisi Tuberi, saved the Labasa women’s football team as they beat Rewa 2-1 in the Digicel Fiji Women’s Super League clash.

The win also enabled the side to maintain its winning record in the competition.

Labasa’s technical advisor Arthur Simmons said during halftime, he emphasised to the players the importance of capitalising on their goal scoring opportunities.

“Missed opportunities was the result of a low scoring game for us,” he said.

Simmons said the win was important because they did not drop points in their home match.
