Deputy Head Boy Dies After Freak Accident
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Livai Driu, is calling on bus drivers and passengers, especially students to ensure safety at all times.
The Police chief of operations (COO) reiterated this after a student died in a freak bus accident in Naila, Nausori, on Monday afternoon.
The late Isikeli Ligadua Rokosuka was the deputy head boy of Bau Central College.
He was to turn 19 years old on April 23.
A statement from Police said the student allegedly jumped off the bus while it was moving resulting in him being trapped under one of the tyres.
Police said the driver of the bus is in custody as statements from students and witnesses were being compiled as part of investigations. ACP Driu said while the incident was regrettable, safety should be observed at all costs.
“Safety of the passengers inside the bus depends on its drivers and I’m calling on all bus drivers to consider the safety of their passengers first before leaving for your designated route,” said ACP Driu.
“We are also calling on school students to respect the bus drivers and practise safety while travelling on the bus.
“Bus drivers have that huge responsibility while driving and things will only get worse for them if students or other passengers act in a manner which compromises everyone else’s safety.”
A selfless, humble son
At their home in Nausori yesterday, devastated mother, Taraivini Ravolau, said her son was a selfless, caring and humble boy.
Isikeli was the eldest of five siblings and hails from Vanuadina, Tokatoka, Tailevu, with maternal links to Suvalailai, Rewa.
“Every morning, he would ask me to iron his uniform but on Monday morning he ironed his own uniform,” Ms Ravolau said.
“My son was someone who was humble, funny and always looked after his younger siblings.
“Isikeli’s father died when he was one years old and when I remarried he was brought up by my husband with our children.
“It is hard for me to believe that he really is no more.
“This Thursday, he wanted to go for the Tailevu (Rugby) Under 19 trial but now it would remain a dream.”
