Boletakanakadavu reigns

- KARALAINI WAQANIDROLA SUVA

Kesaia Boletakanakadavu could be on her way to breaking the Coke Games senior girls 100 metres if she continues to push herself in the coming week.

Boletakanakadavu clocked 12.53 seconds in the 100 metres final of the Suva Zone One at the HFC Bank Stadium yesterday.

She is within reach to smash one of the longest standing records set by Makelesi Tumelevu of Suva Grammar in 2008 at 12.16s. Gospel High School flyer Younis Bese equalled the 15-year-old record in 2015.

The senior boys’ blue ribbon was won by Alifereti Nacoka of John Wesley College; he clocked 12.97s.

Pacific sprint king Banuve Tabakaucoro is the national schools’ senior boys 100m record holder at 10.71s, which was set in 2009.

The ex-Marist colourful athlete also set the senior boys 200m record at 21.70 sec the same year. With the number of schools participating in the Suva zone 1 jumping to 22 this year following the inclusion of Christian Mission Fellowship Secondary there was even distribution of medals across both divisions and the four grades.

Suva Zone 2 on the other hand has 13 schools registered with giants Marist Brothers and Suva Grammar breezing through to the Cokes.

With a difference of nine schools, there could be regrouping to allow more room for competition and exposure in future.

CMF jumper sets target

Composed Apisai Bati of Christian Mission Fellowship (CMF) College goes down as part of his school history after winning gold in the senior boys’ high jump. As a first-timer, Year 12 student Bati said he was just excited and proud of his achievement.

“I had set my sight on winning gold to qualify for the Coca-Cola Games next week and I have made it,” Bati said.

MGM scooped the girls relays winning all grades in the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m except for the subjunior girls 4 x 400m relay.

These victories added seven gold medals to their total tally.

Their boys’ relay teams managed two winning the sub junior boys 4 x 400m and inter boys 4 x 100m.

MGM, RSMS top medal tally

Suva One regulars Ratu Sukuna Memorial School won the boys division with 10 gold, 5 silver and 10 bronze medals.

Second was MGM with 7 gold, 10 silver, 2 silver and CMF was third with 7 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze. MGM once again won the girls’ division with 28 gold, 14 silver and 8 bronze.
