MINISTRY OF EDUCATION CRACKS DOWN ON STUDENTS MISBEHAVIOR
REMINDING THEM ABOUT THE UPCOMING ANNUAL COKE GAMES, AND THE NEED FOR TEACHERS TO ENSURE THERE IS CLOSE SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS
The Ministry of Education has issued a circular to all school heads regarding student behavior in public spaces, following a viral video showing students misbehaving on a Central Transport bus in Suva on Wednesday.
The video was taken by a passerby opposite the Suva Handicraft Centre. Students were returning from the day-2 of the Suva Zone 1 athletics meet. The video received thousands of negative reactions, with parents urging students to behave.
Acting Permanent Secretary Timoci Bure confirmed that the circular was sent out with a reminder for close supervision of students during the upcoming Coke Games, and a warning against misbehavior on public transport. Mr. Bure stated that the Ministry addressed principals from selected
schools in the central division about the need for student safety and to address behavioral problems.
The general manager of Central Transport Limited, Subnesh Chand, highlighted that such misbehavior often puts drivers at risk. On the said day, the bus was stopped by the police at Knolly Street bus stop in Suva, with the students warned to stop shaking the bus and ordered to get off. However,
the students boarded the same bus at the next stop and continued with their rowdy behavior, posing a risk to themselves and others.
Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, weighed in on the issue, encouraging students to behave responsibly and show kindness and courtesy to others in public spaces.
As the country approaches one of the biggest athletic events in the region,
relevant authorities are once again reminding students to behave responsibly and act with consideration towards others.
Mr Tikoduadua encouraged students to show kindness and courtesy to others, not just to fellow students, and to avoid being rowdy or disruptive in public.
