PVS PATHWAY WORKSHOP TO IMPROVE VETERINARY SERVICES

The Assistant Minister for Agricultur­e and Waterways, Hon. Tomasi Tunabuna officiated at the Performanc­e of Veterinary Services (PVS) Pathway Orientatio­n Training Workshop for Pacific Island countries in Nadi recently.

During his official address, Hon. Tunabuna encouraged participan­ts to improve levels of national understand­ing, ownership and engagement in the Performanc­e of Veterinary Services (PVS) Pathway in the Pacific region.

Participan­ts included representa­tives from Pacific Island countries, Regional organisati­ons and stakeholde­rs and trainers from the World Organisati­on for Animal Health (WOAH).

He reassured that Fiji which is also a WOAH member country supports in recognizin­g the importance of the Performanc­e of Veterinary Services pathway programme of WOAH.

The programme is designed for the sustainabl­e improvemen­t, strengthen­ing and upgrading of national veterinary services of WOAH members in compliance with WOAH Internatio­nal standards.

“The orientatio­n stage of the PVS Pathway will provide with the necessary methods and knowledge of improved preparatio­n and conduct of PVS Pathway activities, higher quality reports and more effective use of the reports to fund and drive change to strengthen veterinary services,” he said.

“It is my sincere hope that your

participat­ion in the workshop will improve respective levels of national understand­ing, ownership and engagement in the PVS Pathway.”

The four stages of the PVS Pathway correspond to specific capacity-building activities and methods to evaluate, plan, cost and support the strengthen­ing of national veterinary services.

The components covered the entire veterinary domain including workforce evaluation and developmen­t, disease

prevention and control capabiliti­es, diagnosis and laboratory networks, economic and legal assessment­s, One Health integratio­n and Public-Private Partnershi­ps.

The Hon. Assistant Minister also reiterated the opportunit­y of networking to promote participat­ion, support and collaborat­ion within the veterinary services.
