JOINT AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE EUROPEAN UNION, GERMAN FEDERAL MINISTRY FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION WILL HELP THE REGION IN ITS CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE GLOBAL DISASTER.
Approximately $7 million have been committed by the European Union (EU) and German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The European Union (EU) in the Pacific yesterday signed a financing agreement with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The agreement will aid the Pacific Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) hub under the Paris agreement to fight climate change.
NDCs hub works with 14 Pacific island countries, which engage directly with one focal point each for country which is a high-level government representative from the ministry responsible for climate change.
While signing the agreement, Ambassador and head of the Delegation of the European Union for the Pacific, Sujiro Seam acknowledged that climate change is a challenge for the people in the Pacific.
He said climate financing was one alternative in fighting the disaster. Mr Seams said the financial assistance was timely and appropriate.
German Ambassador to New Zealand, Nicole Menzenbach said yesterday’s signing between the EU in the Pacific and the German government is

The central goal of the hub is to realise the vision of a sustainable, lowcarbon and climate resilient Pacific.
By supporting processes for the full implementation of the NDCs that PICs have committed to under the Paris Agreement considering their national circumstances, including mobilising support through its internal and external partners and its broader network, the hub aims to advance the following specific objectives:

■ Strengthen enabling environment for NDC implementation.
■ Accelerate NDC action and project/program implementation in PICs.
■ Enhance NDC measurement, reporting and verification and transparency of climate action.
